“Less publicized, however, is how the fragile communication system linking man (or woman) to drone can be disrupted by something as seemingly harmless as a house cat. That’s essentially what happened in one instance when operators in the U.S. lost control of a drone. “Actually, a cat climbed into one of the electronic nodes and fried everything and shut down the comms link,” Air Force Col. Grant Webb, the director of training for the unmanned aircraft center at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, told an audience at an aviation conference in Texas last week.” —In Cat Vs. Drone, Cat Wins

“Robot cats and other man-made companions could help Britain’s elderly, according to a report by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The report recommends that autonomous devices could provide a variety of different services to older people, ranging from basic companionship to medical monitoring. Devices with the appropriate sensors could act as fire detectors, or flash lights when doorbells or phones ring. “This is not constrained by the technological possibility of it so much as by the desire to do it — and that is bound up with all sorts of social factors,” said Professor Will Stewart of Southampton University, who contributed to the report, speaking to Reuters. “It is not a complete replacement for your kid calling you once a week. What you want is continuous attention and that is very difficult,” said Stewart. Maybe older Brits could start with the Dream Cat Venus, an autonomous robotic feline that is already available for about $110 in Japan.” —Robot Cats Purrrrfect for Elderly | LiveScience

“Poor little guy. I’m sorry, but I don’t think that’s going to be anything you can get fixed. That’s, what, three different circuit boards that look like they got splintered there? And look at the way the chassis is dented. All those little pieces are scattered everywhere, too—I think that’s its tail on the sidewalk. Must have been quite the collision.” —McSweeney’s Internet Tendency: I’m Sorry That My Robot Car Ran Over Your Robot Cat. (via new-aesthetic)

“If artists and technologists want to be the wranglers of Sterling’s “cat herd” there are a few problems with their current modus operandi. Sterling’s critique is not subtle: stop gawking sci-fi robot-vision screen captures, slapping labels on them and presenting it as an aesthetic. That inclination is a natural first step towards understanding. In order to make meaningful progress, creatives need to invest in learning how these systems function and take a critical stance. Doing this will require closing Google Chrome for a few hours and picking up a book on machine vision. Or befriending some non-artists outside of the creative class. People already versed in machine language need to be convinced that the tumblr is onto something.” —In Response To Bruce Sterling’s “Essay On The New Aesthetic” | The Creators Project
